Slow Cooker Sausage and Pierogies Foil Packets

This slow cooker sausage and pierogies recipe is the perfect solution for busy weeknights when you want a warm, comforting meal without spending hours in the kitchen. Made with just four simple ingredients, this easy crockpot dinner combines tender potato-and-cheese pierogies, smoky sausage, sweet onions, and melted butter for a rich, savory meal the whole family will love.

The secret is wrapping everything tightly in aluminum foil before placing it in the slow cooker. The trapped steam helps soften the pierogies while the buttery sausage juices mingle with the onions, creating a delicious, comforting dinner with minimal preparation and cleanup.

    Ingredients

    • 1 package (16–20 oz) frozen potato-and-cheese pierogies
    • 1 ring (12–14 oz) smoked beef sausage or kielbasa, sliced into rounds
    • 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
    • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted

    Instructions

    1. Lightly spray the inside of your slow cooker with nonstick cooking spray. Prepare two large sheets of heavy-duty aluminum foil.
    2. In a large bowl, combine the frozen pierogies, sliced beef sausage, and onion. Pour the melted butter over everything and toss gently until evenly coated.
    3. Divide the mixture between the two foil sheets. Fold the long sides over the filling and seal the edges tightly to create two secure packets.
    4. Place the foil packets seam-side up inside the slow cooker. Cover with the lid.
    5. Cook on LOW for 4–5 hours or HIGH for 2–2 1/2 hours, until the pierogies are tender and the ingredients are thoroughly heated. Cooking times may vary depending on your slow cooker.
    6. Carefully remove the packets using oven mitts or tongs. Open them away from your face because hot steam will escape. Gently stir the contents to distribute the buttery juices.
    7. Serve warm, spooning the flavorful onion and sausage juices over each portion. Add chopped parsley or black pepper if desired.

Benefits of This Easy Crockpot Dinner

    • Only 4 ingredients: A simple shopping list makes meal planning easier.
    • Minimal preparation: Combine the ingredients, wrap them in foil, and let the slow cooker do most of the work.
    • Family-friendly comfort food: Tender pierogies, savory sausage, and buttery onions create a satisfying combination.
    • Less cleanup: Foil packets help contain the juices and reduce the need for extra cookware.
    • Budget-friendly meal: Frozen pierogies and a few everyday ingredients make this a practical dinner option.
    • Easy to customize: Use beef or turkey smoked sausage, add your favorite seasonings, or serve with vegetables for a more balanced meal.

    Helpful Tips and Variations

    • For a lighter option: Use turkey smoked sausage and replace half the butter with low-sodium chicken broth.
    • For extra flavor: Choose smoked beef kielbasa and add a pinch of garlic powder or black pepper.
    • For a tangy side: Serve with sauerkraut, dill pickles, or a spoonful of sour cream.
    • Add vegetables: Serve with steamed green beans, shredded cabbage, or a fresh green salad.
    • For browned edges: Transfer the cooked ingredients to a broiler-safe dish and broil briefly, watching carefully.
    • For food safety: Keep frozen pierogies frozen until preparation, use fully cooked sausage, and ensure the food reaches a safe internal temperature. Refrigerate leftovers within two hours.
