INGREDIENTS
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
1 cup granulated sugar
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup buttermilk
2 cups peeled, cored, and chopped apples (such as Granny Smith)
1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)
INSTRUCTIONS
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan or a 9×9-inch square pan.
In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Set aside.
In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy, using a hand mixer or a stand mixer.
Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
Gradually add the dry flour mixture to the wet mixture, alternating with the buttermilk. Mix until just combined.
Gently fold in the chopped apples and nuts, if using.
Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread it evenly.
Bake in the preheated oven for about 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. Then, transfer the cake to a wire rack to cool completely.
Once the cake is completely cooled, you can dust it with powdered sugar for a decorative touch.
Slice and serve the apple cake as a delightful dessert or snack.
Enjoy your homemade apple cake with its warm and comforting flavors. You can also serve it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for an extra treat.
