Ingredients (Serves 8)
3 cups self-rising flour (or make your own: 3 cups all-purpose flour + 4 1/2 tsp baking powder + 3/4 tsp salt)
1 cup milk (or water, room temperature, for a neutral flavor)
3 tbsp granulated sugar
2 tbsp salted butter, melted (optional, for brushing top)
Directions:
Prepare slow cooker: Line a 5- to 6-quart slow cooker with parchment paper, pressing it up the sides. Lightly grease with butter or cooking spray.
Mix dry ingredients: In a bowl, whisk together self-rising flour and sugar for a soft, even crumb.
Add milk: Pour in milk and gently stir until a thick, sticky batter forms. Avoid overmixing.
Transfer batter: Scrape the batter into the prepared slow cooker and smooth the top slightly.
Cover: Place a clean kitchen towel over the crock, then set the lid on top. This prevents excess moisture and ensures a rustic crust.
Cook: Cook on HIGH for 2–2 1/2 hours. Bread is done when edges are lightly browned, the top is set, and a toothpick comes out clean.
Add butter: Lift bread using parchment paper. Brush melted butter on top immediately for a soft, flavorful crust.
Cool & serve: Let cool 15–20 minutes before slicing. Serve warm for maximum softness and buttery flavor.
Tips & Variations:
Self-rising flour substitute: Use all-purpose flour with baking powder and salt.
Milk alternatives: Almond, oat, or soy milk work for dairy-free versions.
Extra buttery flavor: Brush more melted butter when serving.
Crispier crust: Broil on a baking sheet 2–3 minutes after cooking.
Storage: Wrap leftovers in foil at room temperature for 1–2 days. Reheat slices in a skillet or toaster oven.
Leftover ideas: Cube and toast into homemade croutons.
