    French Onion Steak Sandwich Recipe

If you love French onion soup but crave it in handheld form, this French Onion Steak Sandwich is the ultimate comfort food. Tender ribeye steak, buttery caramelized onions, and gooey melted Gruyère cheese come together between toasted bread for a rich and satisfying bite. Perfect for a cozy dinner, game-day meal, or an indulgent lunch!

    Ingredients:

1 lb ribeye or sirloin steak, thinly sliced (or cooked medium and sliced against the grain)

2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced

    2 tbsp butter

    1 tbsp olive oil

1 tsp fresh thyme (or ½ tsp dried thyme)

    2 cloves garlic, minced

½ cup beef broth (adds depth to the onions)

1 tsp balsamic vinegar (optional, for sweetness)

Salt & black pepper, to taste

4 slices thick bread (French bread or sourdough works best)

4 slices Gruyère or provolone cheese, for melty goodness

1 tbsp mayonnaise (optional, for golden toasted bread)

    Directions:

    1. Caramelize the Onions

Heat butter and olive oil in a skillet over medium-low heat.

Add onions, thyme, and a pinch of salt. Cook slowly, stirring often, until deep golden brown (about 20–25 minutes).

Stir in garlic, beef broth, and balsamic vinegar. Let it simmer until reduced and rich. Set aside.

    2. Cook the Steak

Season sliced steak with salt and black pepper.

Sear in a hot skillet over medium-high heat until cooked to your liking (medium-rare to medium is ideal).

    Slice thin if needed.

    3. Build the Sandwich

Lightly toast bread with butter or mayo until golden.

Add a slice of cheese, layer on the steak, pile on the caramelized onions, and top with another slice of cheese.

Close the sandwich with the second piece of bread.

    4. Final Toast (Optional)

Press the sandwich in a hot skillet or panini press until the cheese is melted and everything is gooey inside.

    Serving Ideas:

Pair this French Onion Steak Sandwich with crispy fries, roasted potatoes, or a fresh side salad. It’s hearty, cheesy, and full of flavor the perfect comfort food sandwich recipe for steak lovers!
