Steak with Mushroom Gravy on Creamy Mashed Potatoes

If you’re craving a hearty, restaurant-style meal at home, this Steak with Mushroom Gravy on Creamy Mashed Potatoes is the ultimate comfort food. Juicy pan-seared steak, rich homemade mushroom gravy, and ultra-creamy mashed potatoes come together for a satisfying, family-favorite dinner that’s perfect for weeknights or special occasions.

    Ingredients:

    Creamy Mashed Potatoes
2 lbs russet potatoes, peeled and quartered
½ cup milk (whole or 2%)
    4 tbsp unsalted butter
¼ cup sour cream (optional, extra creamy)
Salt & freshly ground black pepper, to taste

    Pan-Seared Steak
4 sirloin or ribeye steaks (6 oz each, ~1-inch thick)
    1 tbsp olive oil
Salt & freshly ground black pepper, to taste

    Homemade Mushroom Gravy
8 oz cremini mushrooms, thinly sliced
    2 tbsp unsalted butter
    2 tbsp all-purpose flour
    2 cups low-sodium beef broth
    1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
    ½ tsp dried thyme
Salt & freshly ground black pepper, to taste
    Fresh parsley, chopped (optional garnish)

    Instructions:

Add potatoes to a large pot, cover with cold salted water, and bring to a boil. Cook 15–20 minutes until fork-tender. Drain well.

Return potatoes to the pot. Add milk, butter, and sour cream. Mash until smooth and fluffy. Season with salt and pepper. Cover to keep warm.

Pat steaks dry and generously season both sides with salt and black pepper.

Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook steaks 4–5 minutes per side for medium-rare (adjust to preference). Remove and rest 5 minutes.

In the same skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add mushrooms and cook 5–7 minutes until golden and tender.

Sprinkle flour over mushrooms and stir for 1 minute. Slowly whisk in beef broth, scraping the pan. Add Worcestershire sauce and thyme.

Let gravy simmer 5–7 minutes until rich and velvety. Season to taste.

Spoon creamy mashed potatoes onto plates, top with steak, and generously ladle mushroom gravy over everything. Garnish with parsley if desired.
