    Classic Homemade Amish Baked Custard

    Ingredients:

    – 1 cup granulated sugar
    – 1/3 cup cornstarch
    – 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
    – 1/4 teaspoon salt
    – 3 cups whole milk
    – 3 eggs
    – 1 egg yolk
    – 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

    Instructions:

    1. Preheat your oven to 325°F (165°C).

    2. In a medium bowl, combine sugar, cornstarch, nutmeg, and salt.

    3. Heat milk in a large saucepan until it simmers over medium heat.

    4. Gradually blend the dry ingredients into the hot milk, stirring until smooth.

    5. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-low heat, stirring continuously. Reduce heat and cook for 1 minute, or until the mixture thickens.

    6. Remove from heat and mix in the eggs, egg yolk, and vanilla extract.

    7. Transfer the custard into a 9-inch pie plate or baking dish.

    8. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the custard is set and slightly golden.

    9. Allow the custard to cool slightly before serving.
