**Yield:** 1 loaf
Ingredients:
– 4 cups all-purpose flour
– 1/2 cup margarine or butter, softened
– 4 tablespoons white sugar
– 1 teaspoon baking soda
– 1 tablespoon baking powder
– 1/2 teaspoon salt
– 1 cup buttermilk
– 1 large egg
– 1/4 cup butter, melted
– 1/4 cup buttermilk
Directions:
1. Preheat the Oven:
– Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Lightly grease a large baking sheet to prevent sticking.
2. Prepare the Dough:
– In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, softened margarine, white sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Mix well until the ingredients are fully incorporated.
– Add in 1 cup of buttermilk and the large egg, stirring until a sticky dough forms.
3. Knead the Dough:
– Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it slightly to bring it together. The dough will be a bit sticky, but that’s okay.
– Shape the dough into a round loaf and place it on the prepared baking sheet.
4. Prepare the Topping:
– In a small bowl, combine the melted butter with 1/4 cup of buttermilk. Brush this mixture over the top of the loaf.
– Using a sharp knife, cut an ‘X’ into the top of the loaf to allow it to expand properly during baking.
5. Bake the Bread:
– Bake in the preheated oven for 45 to 50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the loaf comes out clean. Start checking for doneness after 30 minutes.
– For extra flavor and a beautiful golden crust, you can continue to brush the loaf with the butter mixture while it bakes.
6. Serve:
– Allow the Irish Soda Bread to cool slightly before slicing. Serve warm for the best taste experience.
