Ingredients for Potato Dauphinoise Gratin
1 kg potatoes (Yukon Gold or similar)
Butter, for greasing
2 garlic cloves, crushed
A pinch of ground nutmeg
300 ml milk
250 ml heavy cream (cooking cream)
Salt and black pepper, to taste
How to Make Classic Potato Dauphinoise
Prepare the Potatoes
Peel the potatoes and slice them very thinly (about 2 mm thick). Do not wash them—this keeps the natural starch, which helps create a creamy texture. Wipe gently with a clean cloth if needed.
Layer the Dish
Butter an oven-safe baking dish. Arrange a layer of sliced potatoes evenly across the bottom.
Sprinkle lightly with crushed garlic, nutmeg, salt, and pepper.
Repeat the layers until all potatoes are used.
Add the Milk
Pour the milk into the dish, making sure it does not fully cover the potatoes.
Bake Covered
Preheat the oven to 170°C (340°F).
Grease a sheet of aluminum foil with butter and cover the dish. Bake for 45 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender.
Add Cream & Gratin
Remove the foil and spread the cream evenly over the potatoes. Return to the oven uncovered and bake until the top is golden and lightly crispy. Broil the last few minutes if needed.
Serve
Remove from the oven and let rest for a few minutes before serving. Creamy, tender, and irresistibly delicious!
