    Healthy & Authentic Greek Moussaka Recipe

    Greek Moussaka is a warm, comforting, and flavorful Mediterranean casserole made with tender eggplants, spiced ground meat, and creamy béchamel sauce. This traditional Greek dish is perfect for family dinners, meal prep, or anyone looking to enjoy healthy Mediterranean cooking rich in nutrients and bold flavors.

    Ingredients:

    For the Moussaka
    2 large eggplants, sliced
    400 g ground beef or lamb
    1 onion, diced
    2 garlic cloves, minced
    400 g crushed tomatoes
    1 tsp cinnamon
    1 tsp oregano
    Salt & pepper, to taste
    2 tbsp olive oil
    For the Béchamel Sauce
    40 g butter
    40 g flour
    400 ml milk
    1 egg yolk
    Pinch of nutmeg

    Instructions:

    Prepare the eggplants: Roast or pan-fry the sliced eggplants in a little olive oil until soft and lightly golden.
    Cook the meat: Sauté onion and garlic, then add the ground beef (or lamb).
    Season and simmer: Stir in the crushed tomatoes, cinnamon, oregano, salt, and pepper. Simmer for about 15 minutes until the sauce thickens.
    Make the béchamel: Melt butter, whisk in flour, then gradually add milk. Cook until thick and smooth. Remove from heat and stir in the egg yolk and nutmeg.
    Assemble the moussaka: Layer eggplants, then meat sauce, then béchamel in a baking dish.
    Bake: Cook in a preheated oven at 180°C for 35–40 minutes, until golden and set.
    Cool & serve: Allow to rest a few minutes before slicing for clean layers.
