Spicy Homemade Chakalaka Recipe

Looking for an easy and delicious South African Chakalaka recipe packed with flavorful vegetables and bold spices? This traditional Chakalaka relish is perfect for braais, barbecues, family gatherings, or as a spicy side dish with pap, rice, or grilled meat.

 

Ingredients:

3–4 medium carrots, grated

1 onion, diced

1 green bell pepper, diced

1 red bell pepper, diced

3 tbsp cooking oil

1 tbsp paprika

2 tbsp cayenne pepper

1 tsp turmeric

1 tsp salt

1 tin baked beans

3 tbsp sweet chili sauce

Crushed black pepper, to taste

 

Instructions:

Step 1 – Sauté the Vegetables
In a heated nonstick pan, add the grated carrots, diced onion, green pepper, and red pepper.

Step 2 – Add the Spices
Pour in the cooking oil, then season with paprika, cayenne pepper, turmeric, and salt. Stir well and fry until the vegetables are soft and fragrant.

Step 3 – Add Beans and Sauce
Stir in the baked beans and sweet chili sauce. Sprinkle a little crushed black pepper and let the mixture simmer for a few minutes.

Step 4 – Serve
Remove from heat and serve your spicy homemade Chakalaka warm. Enjoy as a side dish, relish, or dip!
