Surf and Turf Chow Mein with Garlic Butter Drizzle
This dish is a delicious combination of surf and turf – juicy steak, plump shrimp, and crispy chow mein noodles – all coated in a flavorful Asian-inspired sauce.
For the sauce:
- Combine 1/4 cup each of oyster sauce and soy sauce in a bowl.
- Whisk in 2 tsp sesame oil, 1 tbsp rice vinegar, 1 tsp cornstarch, 2 tbsp brown sugar, and 1/2 tsp garlic chili sauce (adjust for desired heat).
Preparing the vegetables:
- Sauté sliced bell peppers and onions in oil over medium heat until softened and slightly charred (about a few minutes).
Noodles:
- Heat the sauce in a pan over medium heat.
- Add refrigerated chow mein noodles and toss until the sauce thickens and coats the noodles.
- Stir in the previously cooked bell peppers and onions.
Shrimp:
- Season shrimp with salt, pepper, garlic powder, chili powder, onion powder, and olive oil.
- Cook shrimp in a separate pan with a little oil over medium-high heat for 2-3 minutes per side, until they curl into a nice C shape.
Steak:
- Season your New York Strip steak with cracked sea salt, fresh cracked pepper, garlic powder, and chili powder.
- Sear the steak in a hot cast iron skillet with a little oil for about 3 minutes per side over medium-high heat.
- Reduce heat to medium, add garlic herb butter, and baste the steak with a spoon while it cooks to your preferred doneness (use a meat thermometer for internal temperature).
Assembly:
- Divide the chow mein noodles with vegetables onto plates.
- Top with cooked steak and shrimp.
Garlic Butter Drizzle (optional):
- Melt butter over low heat.
- Season with salt, pepper, garlic, red pepper flakes, garlic powder, and your choice of herbs.
- Drizzle the garlic butter over the entire dish for an extra flavorful touch.
