This homestyle smothered hamburger steak recipe is packed with rich flavors, tender beef patties, and a creamy mushroom gravy that will have everyone coming back for seconds! Perfect for a comfort food dinner, this dish pairs beautifully with mashed potatoes, rice, or buttery biscuits.
Ingredients:
2 large eggs
2 tbsp minced onion
1 tbsp beef base
½ tsp black pepper
3 slices white bread
2 lbs lean ground beef
1 (10.75 oz) can condensed cream of mushroom soup
1 (10.75 oz) can water
1 dash Worcestershire sauce
Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare the Patties
In a bowl, whisk together eggs, minced onion, beef base, and black pepper. Tear the white bread into pieces and soak them in the mixture. Add the ground beef and mix well until combined. Form into 8 hamburger steak patties.
Step 2: Brown the Patties
Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patties until browned on both sides and no longer pink in the center, about 8 minutes per side. Remove from skillet and set aside.
Step 3: Make the Mushroom Gravy
Drain excess grease from the skillet. Whisk together cream of mushroom soup, water, and Worcestershire sauce until smooth. Return the patties to the skillet, spoon the sauce over them, and bring to a gentle boil over medium-high heat. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 20 minutes until the gravy thickens and flavors meld.
