    • 800g beef (chuck or stew meat), cubed

    • 1 tsp ground cumin
    • 2 tbsp tomato paste
    • 1 liter beef broth (or water)
    • 2 tbsp olive oil
    • 1 bay leaf
    • 1 tsp freshly ground black pepper
    • Salt, to taste
    • 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar
    • 3 potatoes, cut into cubes

     How to Make Classic Hungarian-Style Beef Goulash

     Sear the Beef

    In a large Dutch oven or heavy-bottomed pot, heat olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the cubed beef and sear until browned on all sides. Remove and set aside.

     Sauté Onions and Garlic

    In the same pot, add chopped onions and minced garlic. Sauté for about 5 minutes until onions turn soft and translucent.

     Add Seasonings and Tomato Paste

    Stir in sweet paprika, hot paprika (if using), cumin, and tomato paste. Mix well to coat the onions and garlic in the flavorful seasoning.

     Simmer the Goulash

    Return the seared beef to the pot and pour in beef broth (or water) until the meat is fully covered. Add the bay leaf, black pepper, and salt. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for 1 hour 30 minutes, until the beef is tender.

     Add Potatoes and Vinegar

    Halfway through cooking, add cubed potatoes and balsamic vinegar. Continue cooking until the potatoes are fork-tender and the goulash has thickened into a rich, flavorful stew.
