Ultimate Patty Melt with Caramelized Onions & Secret Sauce
This cheesy, buttery, and flavor-packed patty melt was such a hit that my mom immediately asked for the recipe! A perfect blend of juicy beef, gooey Swiss and cheddar, and crispy rye bread, all tied together with a creamy homemade secret sauce. This classic diner-style burger sandwich is irresistible!
Ingredients:
1 lb ground beef
1 large onion, thinly sliced
8 slices rye bread
4 slices Swiss cheese
4 slices cheddar cheese
Butter, for grilling
Salt & pepper, to taste
For the Secret Sauce:
½ cup mayonnaise
2 tbsp ketchup
1 tbsp sweet pickle relish
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
Directions:
Make the Secret Sauce: In a bowl, mix mayonnaise, ketchup, sweet pickle relish, and Worcestershire sauce. Set aside.
Caramelize the Onions: Melt 1 tbsp butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook until golden brown and caramelized (about 15-20 minutes). Remove and set aside.
Cook the Patties: Divide the ground beef into 4 thin patties. Season with salt & pepper. In the same skillet, cook patties over medium-high heat for 3-4 minutes per side. Remove and set aside.
Assemble the Patty Melts: Butter one side of each slice of rye bread. Place 4 slices (butter-side down) in a skillet over medium heat. Add Swiss cheese, a beef patty, caramelized onions, cheddar cheese, and top with another buttered rye slice.
Grill to Perfection: Cook each sandwich 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown & crispy and the cheese is melted.
Serve & Enjoy: Let the patty melts rest for a minute before slicing. Serve with secret sauce on the side or drizzled on top!
